Have you sometimes received customer feedback about a leaking takeaway container? Or have you just wondered what materials you should use to package surplus products or especially surplus food?
We want to give you some tips on packing ResQ orders. π
Why is it important to pack food well?
When food is packed well, it also reduces pick-up damage β it's simple! It would be a real shame if saving food ended up soiling e.g. the customerβs clothes or car.
At ResQ, we want to prevent such accidents together with the ResQ sellers.
Additionally, proper packaging ensures that your food remains edible and tasty. By choosing the right packaging for the food you are selling, you ensure that the food does not dry out or become too moist. Itβs not just about taste: improper packaging can also lead to food safety risks.
Another essential point is that good packaging directly affects the ratings you receive in the ResQ app! π€© For example, if sushi is packed tightly in a container where it gets squashed and mixed with sauces, the experience may not be very pleasant, even if there was nothing wrong with the food itself before packing.
So, packaging matters a lot! π
What if the packaging doesn't hold up and breaks?
It is the seller's responsibility to pack the products in a well-sealed container or suitable packaging (such as a bag) before handing them over to the customer. It is also essential to ensure that no food spills from the takeaway container and that it withstands normal transportation.
If the packaging is not as described above and the food cannot be eaten and/or it has soiled the customer's property, we urge customers to contact our customer service so we can resolve the matter together.
The customer is entitled to compensation if the packaging was inadequate and did not withstand normal transportation. You can read more about complaints in this article.
With proper packaging, you can also avoid compensations for the portions you sell! π
When should I pack the portions?
There is no one right answer to this; you can decide the most suitable time for packing ResQ portions yourself! For some venues, packing and cooling the portions immediately is the best solution, while for others, it is better to keep the portions warm in the kitchen and pack them only at the time of pick-up.
Please consider your own storage possibilities and, importantly, the food safety regulations!
Tip: if you pack portions in advance, it is a good idea to label them immediately, for example, with the customer's name. This significantly eases pick-up situations and ensures that the right portions go to the right customers.
How do I choose the right packaging?
Certain foods, for example, need more ventilation (such as pizza which can become soggy due to condensation), while others need a container that doesn't let moisture escape (like soups and sauces).
Condensation not only causes overly moist food but also weakens food safety.

How do I store food at the right temperature?
A good rule of thumb is that ResQ foods should be stored either hot or cold. Together with the Finnish Food Authority, we have created guidelines to help you with questions about food storage!
You can read more about food safety in these articles:
Always familiarize yourself with the up-to-date guidelines from the Food Authority here.
Please note that the waste legislation differs by country. Make sure you always get familiar with your country's regulations.
Can a customer bring their own takeaway container?
A customer can bring their own container, and the food can be packed directly into it, but in this case, the responsibility for food safety and hygiene immediately transfers from the restaurant to the customer.
If you wish the customer to bring their own container when buying portions from you, please always mention this in your offer. We have sellers in our service who have had very positive experiences with this! It is also a very environmentally friendly way.
However, this is not a very common practice and may affect the ability of some customers to buy portions from you, for example, on their way to work if they don't happen to have a container with them.
